It was built before 1470, probably as a Basilian church, and was later dedicated to St. Catherine's after the construction of the convent of San Domenico (1470-1490) from which you access through two doors - one beside the altar, the other visible still at the top of the building where once stood a wooden walkway that allowed monks to attend religious services. It seems that this church has celebrated the first Mass the famous philosopher Tommaso Campanella, Dominic, originally from near Stignano, which was accepted by the young Dominican priest and stayed 16 years in the Convent of San Domenico. Even after the strong earthquakes of the 1783 earthquake, flood, heavy rains had caused the fall of the roof after the 1908 earthquake that produced the destruction of Reggio and Messina damage was so severe that the church was virtually a ruin for this reason The main altar was moved to safeguard the church of St. Basil Church in 1919.La remained long a ruin. Recently restored, reopened for worship on 8th December 2000. The restoration intentionally leaves out the simple lines and refined the original structure. In the basement of the church were found fragments of sackcloth, bone and rosaries, and some rooms were used as a burial place of the monks themselves. Discovered fortuitously, because hidden behind a brick wall, a beautiful fresco probably during the original construction of the chapel, and on which it appears "from the heirs of the late Louis Arcadians." The roof brick has returned an ancient fresco in good condition depicting the Madonna and Child between two Bishops. SITUATA A: Via Domenico Romeo 89040 Placanica(RC) MAPPA TORNA INDIETRO |
